Welcome!

The Slave Trade Archives Project has allowed for a glimpse into the archival holdings of repositories in the Caribbean Region to uncover documents relating to slavery, slave trade and the societies it created during its implementation as the primary source of labour in the creation of the Atlantic economy during the 17th - 19th centuries.

The project has allowed for a quantitative and qualitative examination of the records their location and condition. This has allowed us to have a greater understanding of the collection strengths and its conservation needs. Such needs have acted as a catalyst towards an implementation plan to safeguard this resource at a regional and national level.

Archives in general in the region are hampered by a lack of resources with which to adequately preserve their collection.  The goal of this project is to highlight the potential and vulnerability of this unique resource.
